Broughshane man had hammer at Hope Street in Ballymena

A BROUGHSHANE man was found with a small hammer at Hope Street in Ballymena after police responded to a 'dropped' 999 call.

It was after 1am on March 7 this year and officers found Phillip Mitchell (23), of Rocavan Meadow, in an intoxicated state.

The defendant admitted possessing the hammer an as offensive weapon in a public place.

He told police he didn't know why he had it on him as he was drunk.

A defence solicitor told Ballymena Magistrates Court the defendant had been helping a relative move house and "had probably taken the hammer with him when he was drunk and doesn't know why".

The defendant was fined £100.
