County Antrim man who downed '14 beers and one whiskey' grabbed partner in 'headlock'

A MAN who downed 14 beers and a glass of Jack Daniel's whiskey assaulted his partner in the early hours over the July 12 period this year by grabbing her in a "headlock" and then he threw an item and smashed a kitchen window.

Luke Jones (24), with an address listed as Hillside in Antrim town, admitted charges of assault and criminal damage.

A prosecutor told Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, police were called to the Rathkyle area of Antrim where a woman said her partner had assaulted her at 3.30am.

When interviewed, Jones told police he had 14 beers and a glass of Jack Daniel's and admitted to grabbing his partner "in a headlock" and smashing the window.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said the defendant had no previous record and it was a "one off aberration".

He said the defendant was "thoroughly ashamed" of what happened.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said: "Courts take a very dim view of domestic violence cases. Thankfully, this appears to have been a one off incident."

He put the defendant on Probation for a year with a condition that he engages in the 'Respectful Relationship Intervention' programme.
