Court hears assault in County Antrim connected to 'borrowed gardening equipment'

A BROUGHSHANE man punched a man a number of times to the face after what a defence lawyer said had been a "disagreement over a piece of gardening equipment which was borrowed".

Ryan Calderwood (31), of Rocavan Meadow, admitted assault in relation to June 16, 2019.

Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena (main picture), heard there had been CCTV footage which District Judge Nigel Broderick said he would like to view.

The defence lawyer said the injured party had been an "erstwhile friend who there had been a disagreement with over a piece of gardening equipment which was borrowed".

The lawyer said the defendant believed he had been "essentially" acting in "self-defence"  but it was accepted he had gone back after there had been a period of time between an earlier alleged incident.

The case was adjourned to September 7 for a pre-sentence report.
