Court in County Antrim hears home occupants 'locked themselves' in bathroom after being awakened by sound of breaking glass

THE occupants of a house "locked themselves" in a bathroom after being awakened by the sound of breaking glass, Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, was told.

Christopher McVeigh (36), of Hillside in Antrim town, admitted causing criminal damage on May 31 this year.

Police followed a "trail of blood" and found McVeigh "covered in blood" with a cut to his arm and he was in possession of a hammer.

He was taken to Antrim Area Hospital.

A defence barrister said he believed the defendant, who had a record, had been drinking.

When asked what he had been doing at the property, McVeigh had told police: "God knows what was going through my head".

He told the court he "fell through" the window and had fixed it the next day at a cost of £300.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said the incident would have been frightening for the house occupants and handed down a three months prison term, suspended for a year.
