'Distressed child' (9) was left alone in car which had been driven by drugged-up motorist in County Antrim

POLICE found a car parked at an angle outside flats at High Street in Ballymena after midnight with the engine running and lights on with a "distressed" nine-year-old girl alone, in the rear of the vehicle.

It was established Jackie Morgan (34), of Ballyclug Mews, Ballymena, had driven the vehicle whilst unfit on March 13 this year.

Police smelt cannabis and the defendant's eyes were dilated and he had slurred speech. A blood sample showed drugs including cocaine and cannabis.

Defence solicitor Andrew Kinney said the defendant damaged his back a number of years ago and attended his GP but then started to "self medicate".

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £200.
