Excess alcohol offence detected after report of vehicle in ditch near Portglenone

A MAN admitted driving with excess alcohol in breath after a report of a vehicle in a ditch at Largy Road near Portglenone.

Christopher Gillan (28), of Rock Road in Greencastle, County Tyrone, was detected in the early hours of April 1 this year.

He had an alcohol in breath reading of 67, the legal limit being 35.

A defence lawyer told Ballymena Magistrates' Court, the defendant, who had no previous record, was "deeply ashamed" of the incident.

The lawyer said the defendant, a concrete worker by trade, had been in Australia for five years and returned home this year with the aim of opening a concrete business but the plans will now be "on hold" because of the driving ban connected with the drink offence.

The lawyer said the defendant is a "very respected" youth officer at a GAA club and is in charge of a number of youth teams and the offence had been "entirely out of character".

The defendant has been banned from driving for a year and fined £400.
