Judge in Ballymena asks motorist caught doing 113mph: 'What on earth were you thinking?'

A COUNTY Down motorist detected doing 113mph in a 70mph zone on the M2 motorway at Rathbeg near Antrim town has been given three penalty points and a £200 fine.

Ian David Caswell (60), of Grange Park, Bangor, was detected at 9pm on June 23 this year.

He pleaded guilty to an excess speed charge at Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, on Tuesday.

A prosecutor said when stopped and cautioned at the time of the incident the defendant made no reply to police.

The court heard he had a previously clear record.

Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne asked the defendant: "What on earth are you thinking driving at that speed?"

He said he would confine the penalty points to three because of the previously clear record but told Caswell: "Watch your speed in future".
