Judge in Ballymena tells man who 'volunteers' at mixed martial arts gym he takes a 'dim view' of domestic violence

A MAN who caused criminal damage to a door in March this year has been put on Probation for a year at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Carlos Armando Pereira (27), of Stroma Drive, Ballymena, was sentenced on charges of criminal damage and assault.

He had acted "out of character," according to a defence solicitor, and regretted his actions.

The lawyer said the defendant "volunteers 30 hours a week" with a mixed martial arts gym and also trains there.

The solicitor said it had been the defendant's first appearance in court and he had learned his lesson and knows he "needs to control his emotions".

District Judge Nigel Broderick said courts taken a "very dim view of any domestic violence" and it was aggravated by a "very young child" being present.
