Man at wheel of car under tow gets suspended sentence for driving whilst disqualified

A MAN at the wheel of a car under tow whilst he was banned from driving has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Hugh Doherty (23), of Dublin Road in Antrim town, came to police attention on February 2 this year at Abbey Road.

Antrim Magistrates' Court, sitting in Ballymena, heard that at the time the defendant felt he had done nothing wrong but after his lawyers investigated the legal position he pleaded guilty to driving whilst banned and using a vehicle without insurance.

He has also been banned from driving for three months.

The court heard a police officer saw the two vehicles "struggling against each other".

A defence lawyer said it was accepted the towing should have been done in a "very mechanical way".

District Judge Nigel Broderick said it was a "somewhat unusual case".

He said that in this incident the towing of the vehicle was not done properly.

The judge added: "Had it been towed away in a proper fashion with the front two wheels off the road then the offence would not have been committed".

The defendant was given a three months prison sentence, suspended for a year.
