Man is accused of fraud by abuse of position at Ulster-Scots group in Antrim town

A 69-year-old man accused of fraud by abuse of his position at an Ulster-Scots organisation has had the case sent to Antrim Crown Court.

It is alleged that Robert  Alexander Millar, of Brantwood Gardens in Antrim town, in August 2018, 'whilst occupying a position in which you were expected to safeguard, or not to act against, the financial interests of The Ulster Scots Cultural Development Trust/Murray House dishonestly abused that position in that you withdrew cash in the sum of £5,000 from the Danske Bank account with the intention, by means of the abuse of that position to make a gain for yourself or another or to cause loss to The Ulster Scots Cultural Development Trust/Murray House'.

He is also charged with stealing £4,600 from the Ulster Scots Development Trust between August and October in 2018.

It is further alleged that between June and November in 2018 he stole £2,000 from a safe belonging to the Ulster Scots Cultural Development Trust at Massereene House at Bridge Street in Antrim town.

The defendant is also accused of 'burglary' on November 3, 2018, by allegedly entering a bar at Massereene House and stealing £817 from a gaming machine.

The accused faces a fifth charge - criminal damage to two gaming machines on November 3, 2018.

The defendant appeared at Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, on Tuesday.

During a Preliminary Enquiry - the legal step to send a case to the Crown Court - a prosecutor submitted there was a case to answer.

A defence lawyer had no contrary submissions.

The court heard the defendant had legal aid and the court granted him one counsel for the Crown Court.

The defendant was given bail in the sum of £500, the conditions of which were not outlined to the court.

The accused is due to be arraigned at the Crown Court on May 30.
