Man spat at police following incident on day of 'band parade' in Ballymena

POLICE received a report of a drunken male in Ballymena where people had gathered for a band parade and then he spat at a police officer and inside a PSNI vehicle.

Francis Kelly (34), with an address listed as Dunclug Gardens, Ballymena, admitted charges of assault on police and criminal damage in relation to August 7 this year.

He also admitted stealing £35 of items including alcohol and also attempted thefts at the Co-op in Ballymena's Broughshane Street in early August.

The defendant appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link from Maghaberry Prison.

A defence lawyer said the defendant was an alcoholic and had been "out of control" previously with several offences.

He had got off drink for "100 days" but started drinking again.

For the latest offences the defendant was given a four months jail term, suspended for two years.
