MEMBERS of the public restrained a man who was banging his head off lamp-posts close to Down Leisure Centre in Downpatrick and when police were called he said: 'F--k the cops'.

Gerard Botsford (20), of Dromore Street in Ballynahinch, appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates Court via video link from his solicitor's office and pleaded guilty to charges of resisting police and being disorderly at Ballydugan Road on the evening of June 1 this year.

A prosecutor said the defendant told police he had taken MDMA and was shouting about wanting to "kill himself".

Police noticed a smell of intoxicating liquor and his eyes were bloodshot and he had slurred speech. He was arrested under the Mental Health Order and as police applied a bandage to his arm he shouted 'F--k the cops'.

Before he was taken to hospital the defendant lay on the ground and had to be lifted into a vehicle.

A defence lawyer said the reference about harming himself was because "he had that MDMA in and wasn't himself. And he had been drinking".

The lawyer said nobody else was hurt during the incident but the defendant had  been a "nuisance".

The lawyer added: "He has caught himself on".

District Judge Amanda Brady gave Botsford a one year conditional discharge and added: "This is an opportunity for him to clean up his act and stop taking MDMA and making a nuisance of himself".
