Man who sexually assaulted two women has eight months jail term replaced with suspended sentence on appeal at Antrim County Court

A MAN with a Ballymena address who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two women and had originally received an eight months jail sentence has had it replaced with a two and a half months sentence, suspended for a year, upon appeal.

Romeo Varga, with an address listed as Albert Place, committed offences on March 4, 2020, and March 17, 2020.

The charges were that he 'intentionally touched' the women, 'the circumstances being that the touching was sexual'.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court recently he was given an eight months prison sentence and also put on the Sex Offenders' Register for seven years.

Bail was then fixed for appeal in the sum of £400 and a judge had ruled the defendant "can't be released pending appeal".

The defendant did not appeal the conviction but did appeal the length of the sentence and at Antrim County Court on Wednesday it was varied to become a suspended sentence.

The Sex Offenders' Register requirement of seven years remains in place.
