Man's plea to judge in Ballymena: 'Please don't send me to jail big man'

A MAN who ran off from police in Templepatrick, after officers detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from two males walking across waste ground, told a judge in Ballymena: "Please don't send me to jail big man".

Ryan Brady (21), with an address listed as Holywell Hospital in Antrim, admitted possessing cannabis and assaulting a police officer on April 24 this year.

When the defendant was caught he "violently struggled with police for a prolonged period" and a police officer received "minor injuries".

Cannabis was located on the defendant during the incident.

The defendant attended Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, via a sightlink.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said he would give the defendant, who had a record, a "last chance" and handed down a five months prison term, suspended for a year.

The defendant told the judge: "Thank you very much".
