Belfast motorist caught doing 107mph was picking up birthday present for his mum

A BELFAST man caught speeding at 107mph was on a trip to a parcel delivery depot in Antrim town to pick up a birthday present for his mum, a defence lawyer told Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Michael McAuley (22), of North Circular Road, was detected breaching the 70mph limit at Rathbeg on the M2 motorway at 3.30pm on April 1 this year.

The defence lawyer said the defendant had not realised the speed he was doing as he had "things on his mind".

District Judge Nigel Broderick said the starting point in his court was a three months ban for motorists doing more than 100mph but in the defendant's circumstances he was tempering that to a one month driving disqualification due to a guilty plea, clear record and a reference. There was also a £150 fine.
