Motorist detected doing 71mph in 40mph zone near Antrim town

A MOTORIST detected doing 71mph in a 40mph zone at the Sevenmilestraight near Antrim town has been given three penalty points and fined £200.

Shannon Rachel Jamison (24), a senior nursing assistant at the Royal Victoria Hospital, who is from Forthriver Drive in Belfast, was detected on May 12 this year.

A defence barrister said the speed limit in the area had "just changed" at the time.

She said the defendant had a "momentary lapse of judgement" and realises there could have been serious consequences.

The defendant had a clear record and licence.

The lawyer said the defendant had "learned a very harsh lesson".

At Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena (main picture), Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne said it was "far too fast even if the speed limit had changed".
