Motorist in Mercedes was caught doing 107mph on way home from dinner in Galgorm

A BUSINESS development officer with an IT firm caught doing 107mph in a Mercedes C250 was on his way home from Galgorm where he had been for a dinner with friends, a defence lawyer said.

Peter Ruck (31), of Hillview, Moneyreagh, County Down, was detected in a 70mph zone on the M2 motorway at Rathbeg near Antrim town on August 1 this year.

Defence solicitor Ciaran Maguire told Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, it was "completely out of character" as the defendant had been driving since the age of 18 with a clear record and no penalty points.

The lawyer said the "powerful" vehicle was new to the defendant and he "hadn't realised the speed".

The lawyer said references showed the defendant is involved in charity fundraising through his workplace and had also "volunteered" in a school.

District Judge Nigel Broderick said it was a "very high speed" and banned the defendant from driving for a month along with a £200 fine.
