A MAN has been jailed for nine months for assaulting his now former partner.

He also admitted attempting to get his former partner to withdraw her statement.

Ballymena Magistrates' Court heard the phone call from prison was recorded.

The defendant appeared at court via a video link from prison and had the assistance of a Romanian interpreter.

A prosecutor said that in January police saw the defendant's then partner in a "very highly distressed state" and they noted injuries to her face.

She told police the defendant had shouted at her and grabbed her and had thrown her against a bedroom wall and started punching her "directly in her face with both fists".

She managed to get away but he pursued her and pinned her against a wall in the hallway and punched and slapped her "across her whole body".

The woman "tried to take refuge" in the bedroom but she was further assaulted.

A defence lawyer said "violence against a female will not be tolerated in any society".

Jailing Varga, Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said the defendant  "should be utterly ashamed of himself".

A two year Restraining Order was also put in place.
