Police found 'unfit' driver hiding under stairs

POLICE found an 'unfit' driver hiding under stairs, Newtownards Magistrates Court was told.

Roben Johnston (22), with an address listed as East Street in Newtownards, admitted driving whilst unfit; taking a vehicle without insurance and insurance and licence offences.

A defence lawyer said the defendant had an argument with a family member and then took their car as he wanted to leave.

The defendant was located in the Kircubbin area where he had gone to a friend's property on May 6, 2021.

The defence lawyer said it was "drug driving".

The defendant, with an address listed as High Street in Comber, on another charge sheet is also charged with possessing two knives with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and a second charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent on October 30, 2021, and that case was adjourned to January.

Details surrounding those charges were outlined at previous hearings.

The defendant had a previous 'unfit' driving-related record.

For the driving matters, Johnston was given a one month's prison sentence; was banned from driving from three years and fined £60.
