A MOTORIST was stopped by police doing "standard" checks at 1am on Sunday May 16 this year at Cullybackey Road in Ballymena and it emerged he was over the drink limit.

Christopher Quigley (27), a butcher, of Cullybackey Road in Ballymena admitted driving with excess alcohol in breath.

The defendant had an a reading of 79 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.

A defence solicitor told Ballymena Magistrates Court there had been "nothing untoward" by the driving but police had been carrying out a "standard check on a Saturday night in to Sunday morning".

The lawyer said the defendant was coming back from a friend's house and although he had taken drink earlier thought he was OK to drive.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £250.
