Van driver used mobile phone to 'find a map'

POLICE saw a van driver "scrolling" on a hand held mobile phone in Ballymena town centre and he has been given six penalty points and a £200 fine for using the device 'whilst driving'.

Gary Dubois (20), of Glenvarna Walk, Newtownabbey, came to police attention at Church Street on November 26 last year.

The defendant told police his satnav had "froze" and he was looking at a map to find an "alternative route" through traffic.

The defendant told Ballymena Magistrates Court he had stopped to 'give way' and "wasn't actually driving at the time".
