Woman and her children assaulted whilst in M&S in Ballymena

A WOMAN and her two children were assaulted whilst in Marks & Spencer in Ballymena's Fairhill shopping centre, a court heard.

Sarah Flemming (24), with an address listed as Limetree Close in Antrim town, was sentenced in relation to three assaults on an August afternoon in 2020.

A prosecutor told Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, police were called after a woman was struck on the cheek with an open hand by Flemming which left a "red mark".

The woman's son was pushed out of the way by the defendant who made contact with his neck and face and Flemming also assaulted the woman's daughter.

The court heard the defendant had a previous record.

A defence solicitor said the defendant had drug addiction issues.

In June this year he said the defendant was in a road traffic collision in which the driver died and she was "momentarily dead at the scene" but she was resuscitated after her heart stopped.

He said Flemming is now "drug free".

District Judge Nigel Broderick said there had been "no excuse or justification" for the shop incident and handed down a four months prison term, suspended for three years.
