Young motorist caught doing 'eye watering speed'

A YOUNG motorist who was doing an "eye watering" speed of more than twice his restriction of 45mph on his way home from Donegal has been banned from driving for two weeks and fined £100.

Ben Malone (18), of Saintfield Road, Carryduff, admitted exceeding his restricted speed after being caught doing 91mph in the Randalstown area on July 28 this year.

A defence lawyer told Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, the defendant had "no excuse" for speeding at Moneynick Road which, a prosecutor said, was a 70mph zone.

The lawyer said the defendant, a university student in Liverpool, had been an "eye watering amount over the R restriction".

District Judge Nigel Broderick said it was "a very excessive speed".

He added: "The reason that the 45mph restriction is there is quite obvious. It is to ensure that drivers who are inexperienced travel slower because when they travel at high speed then they increase the risk of accident".
